When you take a picture what you do is pointing at something and taking the shot. Now, when many people point at an object of interest what do they do? Well... what do people do whenever we look at something. Our eyes automatically create the thing we reading the center of our own eyes. Think about it. When you look at something for your left, you turn your head to center it.
When people take photos, most do the same exact thing... center the topic of importance. Photography, however, differs. Having every subject a person photograph dead center is simply plain boring. It is not very effective unless that is the desired effect.
A solution to this is actually the simple to follow guideline of thirds. Basically, take a photo and draw 3 lines vertically and 3 horizontally. This should create nine equal sized containers. One of those containers is dead center. The rule says to avoid placing the topic of interest in that package. What this causes you to do is place the thing you are photographing left right, top or bottom instead and therefore create more interesting pictures.
The next thing you must do when following this rule is leave head space and breathing room. If your taking a photo of a person plus they are on the left edge, be sure that they may be looking to the right in the empty space. If they are on the left side looking left, there will be no breathing room where they may be looking. The shot will look incorrectly composed and very crammed.
This is an easy technique to look at better shots. Be sure to practice whenever possible and experiment with various ideas and techniques as well.
